Your First Orthodontic Visit

When you finally take the first step towards improving your smile with orthodontics, it can be exciting! But like any other big decision, it can also be a little overwhelming, especially if you aren’t sure what to expect from the orthodontic process.

Here at Central Massachusetts Orthodontic Associates, we understand that orthodontic treatment is one of the most important investments you can make in your oral health, and value the trust you place in our practice. We want to ensure that you feel confident in our care, and that begins with your initial consultation with us!

Let’s take a closer look at what you can expect from your first orthodontic visit, and what comes after.

Your first visit with Central Massachusetts Orthodontic Associates

Your first visit to our office is one of the most important appointments you’ll have. Not only is it our chance to get to know each other, you’ll also learn more about what we have to offer, and will receive a thorough examination.

This visit may last a little longer than subsequent appointments. That’s because we pack a lot into it! We also want to make sure no one feels rushed. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted warmly by our receptionist or a patient coordinator. After taking some information from you, you’ll be shown around our office to help you feel more comfortable in your surroundings before we proceed with the diagnostic records and exam.

One reason why your first visit is so important is because we will determine if there any orthodontic issues present that require treatment — and whether we should begin that treatment immediately, or wait until a later time. Part of this process involves taking photographs of the teeth in their present state. We may also choose to take a panoramic x-ray. This lets us see what’s happening underneath the gums, giving us the chance to check the position and growth of bones and joints, and any teeth that are still below the gum line.

At this point, you’ll receive an examination from Dr. Giarrusso or Dr. Livanos. Besides looking in the mouth, they may also ask some questions, such as whether the jaws make noise when the mouth is opening or closing, or if there are any problems chewing or swallowing. When taken together with the images and information already collected, the exam will allow our doctors to make a proper diagnosis and finalize a custom treatment plan at the first visit!

Whether you’re planning to begin treatment now or later, this is the best time to discuss any questions or concerns you may have. To ensure you fully understand the orthodontic process, our team will discuss the following with you:

  • any oral issues you’re experiencing
  • if treatment is needed immediately
  • what treatment options are available to correct the problem
  • if any teeth will need to be removed
  • an estimate of how long we expect your treatment to take
  • the total investment required for treatment
  • any payment or financing options we have available to you

We take an individualized approach to orthodontic care, and will always take your specific needs, lifestyle, and goals into account when creating a treatment plan for you. This is what allows us to consistently produce superior results and a rewarding orthodontic experience for patients.

The next step towards a straighter smile

Once your initial consultation is complete, we will set up a records appointment for you. During this appointment, we will take a series of diagnostic x-rays and do a digital scan of your teeth. Two weeks later, we’ll bring you back in for a conference with your orthodontist, during which we will review all your records, give you a final diagnosis, and discuss each aspect of your customized treatment plan. If treatment is accepted, we will set you up to receive your orthodontic appliance!

After your appliance is placed or fitted, you can expect follow-up appointments with us every 6-8 weeks or so, although this will depend on your specific treatment plan. During these visits, our doctors will adjust your appliance if necessary, monitor the movement of your teeth, and check that everything is progressing as it should be.

These visits are an essential part of your orthodontic treatment, and we encourage you to only cancel or reschedule if absolutely necessary. We understand that this may happen occasionally, however. If you’re running late or can’t make your appointment for any reason, we simply ask that you let us know as soon as possible. We’ll be happy to accommodate you by rescheduling your appointment for another day to keep your treatment on track!

Investing in a healthier smile

When we outline your personalized treatment plan for you, it will include a breakdown of all applicable fees. We will always inform you of all the costs involved before any treatment begins.

We believe everyone deserves the orthodontic treatment they need, and our practice is dedicated to providing patients of all ages with affordable, effective orthodontic care. We have a variety of payment options for every budget, including all major credit cards. We also offer in-office, interest-free financing that allow you to make convenient, monthly payments on your orthodontic treatment.

If your insurance plan will cover orthodontic treatment, we’ll be happy to help you maximize your benefits. Bring your current insurance card with you to your first visit, and we’ll work with you to receive full insurance benefits for any services. As a courtesy, we will also file your insurance claim for you.
